  • The Back Roads Photographer

  • I call myself The Back Roads Photographer. The back roads that I explore and travel, I bring to life through my photography and digital art. These back roads can be found almost anywhere, but for me, mostly in Kansas and Missouri. The term "back road" should not be taken literally. It can manifest itself in a country or urban setting; in a feeling of nostalgia or a modern marvel; in the wonders of nature, or of the works of man.

  • Having spent the majority of my life living in rural America, I have always loved the sights and sounds and smells of ranch and ag life. Whether it be the dust and rumble of the late summer grape harvesters or the smell of a newly cut alfalfa field or the stoic presence of the cattle that dot the rolling foothills of my state of California, I have always loved living where the land produces a bounty and the people are hard working stewards of the land. A life long horse trainer, I was recently forced to reinvent my life after a little run in with a very aggressive spinal tumor. At 43 years old, I unceremoniously lost the majority of the use of my legs and found that horse training was no longer an option for me. In an attempt to maintain my sanity (and the sanity of my family!) I turned to two long time hobbies in hopes of finding a new purpose in life; writing and photography. With a little more free time, I was able to dedicate myself to these two pursuits, which I enjoy immensely and am grateful to have, for without them, I may have gone insane. With a new appreciation for the beauty that lurks everywhere, I am excited to have been given the opportunity to share my vision of the world one image at a time.

My photos allow me to hold on to precious memories of my family as we not only operate a business, but leave a legacy of hard work, integrity, and the principles set forth by our Heavenly Father. All of my photos are shot in Southeastern Illinois, where we have been blessed to call home and make a living while farming.

My camera is my pride and joy and was the start of my journey into the meanings of Exposure, Aperture, Depth of field... and of the never ending hunt for that special spark that makes you remember a photograph.

  • Ian Thornberry

  • Jackie Andress

  • I'm basically a mom with a camera. My love of photography began mostly when my two boys were born and I began documenting their everyday lives. I suppose it was my feeble attempt to somehow preserve those precious fleeting moments. As the boys grew older, they began to grumble more and more about me taking their pictures so much. But by then the photography bug had bitten – hard ! - so I had to find other things to capture. I turned to inanimate objects that could not complain or run away. And thus my love of photographing anything “Lancaster-County” was born. I am especially attracted to rural landscapes, old barns, roadside wildflowers, pretty weeds (yes, I did indeed say "pretty weeds"), trains, abandoned junk.... It is my passion to capture and share some of the unsung and easily overlooked beauty I see all around me. Admittedly, everyone may not see beauty in some of the odd places where I see it. But I truly believe that there's beauty to be found in almost everything, everywhere. One of my favorite quotes is : "It's not what you look at that matter's, it's what you see." I hope you can see beauty in some of my art. Enjoy.

  • Hi folks-my names Katie Munro of Into the Woods Photography CA. I grew up in a small town just west of the Quèbec/Ontario border called Lancaster Ontario Canada. Lancaster is located just north of the American border. It is known for it's Scottish and farming communities, and is nestled in South Glengarry County. My parents, Bruce and Rhona Munro, owned a Purina dealership-which would eventually become the Agromart Group-and finally, Masterseeds. I grew up with a father who's joy would be to stop the truck, pull off on the side of the road, and admire a nice corn crop from afar. Farming is nothing new to me-the sights, the smells, the adventure-Farmers do after all, feed cities. I am thrilled to join the agstockphoto team-thank you so much for the opportunity you folks have bestowed upon me.

  • "The camera is an instrument that teaches people how to see without a camera." -- Dorothea Lange Photography is just something I do. It's a part of me, like breathing or sleeping or reading. I have always dabbled in creative pursuits-- writing, drawing, painting, and when I was growing up, was convinced I wanted to be an artist or a writer. But growing up, and those people who are charged with getting us there, all have a way of conditioning those inborn dreams and interests right out of us. So, I got jobs, married a wonderful guy, and we spent the last 30+ years raising three great kids, and an assortment of critters as well, along the way. My watercolors and pens gave way to a camera, partly because we needed to record our family's evolution, and partly because cleaning paints and markers off of walls gets old after a few turns. My love of the outdoors, my time spent at our kids' games and events, and my fascination with clouds, storms, and skies, all finally came together when I found myself not just shooting the life and times, but shooting a whole lot of other things that I encountered in my world. When we migrated from California to the Midwest, it was as if something clicked, and photography became an obsession. Though I regret slightly having not realized the infinite subject matter I had before me living in California, the seed had been planted long ago, and the move to Illinois had triggered germination. It hasn't been all easy-peasy. I have spent a lot of time getting in my own way, and I still have a lot of learning to do; but now I know beyond a doubt what I want to be when I grow up, and no one can convince me it's an impractical dream. I want to be a photographer. And I am. I shoot the things I love, things I know well, and some things I know little about. I find that my camera has not only shown me a lot about the world around me, but continues to introduce me to myself. Photography is something that is always teaching me to see without the camera.

With the aid of a powered air purifying respirator to protect my lungs, I can travel the local back roads of the beautiful agricultural area of Pennsylvania where I live. I find joy in capturing rural scenes and my farming community with my camera. The photography hobby, and the changing seasons, help me see the drama of ever-changing newness in familiar sights. • From a young age, I've always been one of those people who would rather stand behind the camera than in front of it. It seems only natural that I would try to make the most of this by constantly having a camera in my hands. So began my life long journey into the world of photography. My main focus and passion is Wildlife and Nature Photography. Observing animals in their natural environment is a fascinating and rewarding experience.
